Each fall, our committee teaches social skills classes covering a variety of areas. Writing thank you notes, phone etiquette, introductions and communication skills, proper dress, dinner manners and dining etiquette are examples of subjects covered in the classes. The goal is to provide them exposure to social situations and allow them to practice these skills in a safe learning environment. The class concluded this December with a luncheon at the Columbia Restaurant giving them the opportunity to apply their newly acquired skills. “A project like this is a huge success for both the students and volunteers. Helping build confidence in young boys and girls is an incredibly rewarding endeavor, and we hope the social skills classes will have a lasting impact on these students and enhance their opportunities for future success.” – Megan Berrigan, Chairman | A project since 2004, The Junior League of Tampa partners with Academy Prep Center of Tampa to teach social skills classes to 6th graders. Academy Prep Center is a private, non-profit, co-ed middle school, promoting educational, social and ethical development of inner-city students. These students must qualify for need-based scholarships and each have the ability and desire to succeed in a rigorous academic program.
JLT is proud to announce an exciting new phase of the social skills class at Academy Prep Center of Tampa. In 2010 JLT will Launch the program and the classes will be taught by the staff and dedicated volunteers of Academy Prep. During the Spring, JLT will work with the school to transition the classroom curriculum and activities to help ensure the success of the class for years to come. | | |
